Module 1: Introduction to Business English
This Unit is a foundation course to the entire Diploma. It introduces the Concepts of Business English and focuses upon the following elements:

Module 2: Business Grammar
Grammar is the system of a language. People sometimes describe grammar as the “rules” of a language; but in fact no language has rules. If we use the word “rules”, we suggest that somebody created the rules first and then spoke the language, like a new game. But languages did not start like that. Languages started by people making sounds which evolved into words, phrases and sentences. No commonly-spoken language is fixed. All languages change over time. What we call “grammar” is simply a reflection of a language at a particular time.

Do we need to study grammar to learn a language? The short answer is “no”. Very many people in the world speak their own, native language without having studied its grammar. Children start to speak before they even know the word “grammar”. But if you are serious about learning a foreign language, the long answer is “yes, grammar can help you to learn a language more quickly and more efficiently.” It’s important to think of grammar as something that can help you, like a friend. When you understand the grammar (or system) of a language, you can understand many things yourself, without having to ask a teacher or look in a book. So think of grammar as something good, something positive, something that you can use to find your way – like a signpost or a map.
Module 2 will focus on those Grammar applications as applicable to business conversation and writing skills.

Module 3: Pronunciation Skills
Reading an English word does not tell you how it is pronounced. For example, the words no and do both end in the letter o. However, no is pronounced like this, and do is pronounced like that. This means that, generally, you have to learn the pronunciation of every word that you’re going to use.
How can you learn the pronunciation of an English word? You can look it up in a dictionary and read about how it is pronounced. Dictionaries tell you about pronunciation through a special system called phonetic transcription.
Phonetic transcriptions are written in a phonetic alphabet. The most popular phonetic alphabet is the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
Different kinds of English have different pronunciation. For example, the pronunciation (the accent) in British English is different from the pronunciation in American English.

You have a choice between British English and American English, because these are the most important kinds of English in the world. Which one should you choose? Probably the kind that you like the most. Whether you choose British or American pronunciation, people will understand you wherever you go. Of course, you don’t have to decide: you can learn to speak both kinds of English.
Module 3 concentrates on pronunciation skills focused within business conversation pieces.

Module 4: Grammar Translation
The grammar-translation method of foreign language teaching is one of the most traditional methods, dating back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was originally used to teach ‘dead’ languages (and literatures) such as Latin and Greek, and this may account for its heavy bias towards written work to the virtual exclusion of oral production. Indeed, the emphasis on achieving ‘correct’ grammar with little regard for the free application and production of speech is at once the greatest asset and greatest drawback to this approach.

The major characteristic of the grammar-translation method is, precisely as its name suggests, a focus on learning the rules of grammar and their application in translation passages from one language into the other. Vocabulary in the target language is learned through direct translation from the native language.

Module 5: Conversational English
English is the international language! 85% of the Internet is in English, three quarters of the world’s mail is written in English, and it is the official language of the Olympic games! The World Trade Organisation debriefs, meets, and publicises in English, even if the representatives are from countries where English is not the native language.     The emphasis of this course is to assist the Business English Teacher in getting started in building up a business English vocabulary. The objective being to teach technique and purpose. We will examine methods of building this library and getting additional information for work related assignments.

Module 7: The Lexical Approach
The lexical approach makes a distinction between vocabulary—traditionally understood as a stock of individual words with fixed meanings—and lexis, which includes not only the single words but also the word combinations that we store in our mental lexicons. Lexical approach advocates argue that language consists of meaningful chunks that, when combined, produce continuous coherent text, and only a minority of spoken sentences are entirely novel creations.

In the lexical approach, lexis in its various types is thought to play a central role in language teaching and learning. Teaching should be based on the idea that language production is the piecing together of ready-made units appropriate for a particular situation. Comprehension of such units is dependent on knowing the patterns to predict in different situations. Instruction, therefore, should center on these patterns and the ways they can be pieced together, along with the ways they vary and the situations in which they occur.

Activities used to develop learners’ knowledge of lexical chains include the following:

  • Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language.
  • First and second language comparisons and translation—carried out chunk-for-chunk, rather than word-for-word—aimed at raising language awareness.
  • Repetition and recycling of activities, such as summarising a text orally one day and again a few days later to keep words and expressions that have been learned active.
  • Guessing the meaning of vocabulary items from context.
  • Noticing and recording language patterns and collocations.
  • Working with dictionaries and other reference tools.
  • Working with language corpuses created by the teacher for use in the classroom or accessible on the Internet—such as the British National Corpus.

Module 8: The Eclectic Approach
The eclectic approach is based on a foundation of three principles:

  • Successful learners focus on language performance, not classroom study.
  • On-the-job English needs should drive classroom learning and independent study. Learners receive immediate business results, because most learning is preparation for actual performance events in presentations, meetings, research, professional
  • Active – Our constructivist method development, email, etc.
  • Successful learners are active, autonomous, and accountable focuses on “learning by doing” with English.
  • Autonomous – The focus on substance learning (learning how to learn) gives clients the tools to take charge of their own learning. So teachers can do more coaching, and less lecturing.
  • Accountable – Enabling clients design and manage their own program, which establishes measurable goals and timetables to keep progress on track.
  • Successful learners use multiple channels.
    Most language learning consists of a teacher, classroom, and book. In contrast, business English teaching focuses on a wide range of channels that correspond to individual learning styles, such as blogs, peer learning, white papers, web conferencing, podcasts, cable TV, wikis, discussion groups and forums, e-learning, in addition to working with a teacher.

Module 9: Teaching Receptive Skills
Listening to and understanding speech involves a number of basic processes, some depending upon linguistic competence, some depending upon previous knowledge that is not necessarily of a purely linguistic nature, and some depending upon psychological variables that affect the mobilisation of these competence and knowledge in the particular task situation. The listener must have a continuous set to listen and understand, and as he hears the utterance, he may be helped by some kind of set to process and remember the information transmitted. His linguistic competence enables him, presumably, to recognise the formatives of the heard utterance, i. e. , to dissect out of the wave form of the morphemes, words, and other meaning-bearing elements of the utterance.
This Module will teach receptive skills, within the context of Business English. Focusing primarily on listening and reading skills.

Module 10: Business Meetings and Presentations
The course will examine how to conduct both Business Meetings and carry our presentations using effective Business English. The emphasis will be on providing the teacher with the skills and techniques to enable instruction to improve the quality of both meeting materials and presentations. Example:-

Business Meetings:
Have an Agenda: Outline ahead of time what points will be covered in the meeting. Write it out, and distribute it to participants ahead of time. This will help avoid the “chasing of rabbits,” and help participants be more prepared for the meeting.
Follow the Agenda: This sounds very elementary, but you’d be surprised by the number of people who take the time to create an agenda, and then totally disregard the agenda during the meeting.
Limit the Agenda to Three Points or Less: Ask yourself, “What are the three most important things we need to cover in the meeting?” Limit the agenda to these three points. The rest of the things you wanted to cover, by definition, weren’t really that important anyway, so why waste everyone’s time?
Set a Time Limit: I would suggest setting the time limit for the meeting to be no longer than 30-minutes. In future meetings, shorten the time by five minutes until the time limit is 15-minutes or less. The leader of the meeting will become much more efficient, and the participants will become much more focused as well. When the time limit is up, end the meeting. You may not get to cover every single thing that you wanted to the first couple of time you try this, but within a short time, you will find that the major information points are being discussed and decisions are being made very efficiently. Encourage Participation from Everyone, but don’t Force Them: Instead of going around the table and asking for opinions or input, just ask a question and let people volunteer their answers. There will be times during any meeting that each person will “phase out”. If we call on every person, it wastes time, and puts people on the spot. Other ways of encouraging participation is to just ask a question, and after someone answers, say something like, “Good, let’s hear from someone else.” If there are people in your meeting who rarely speak, instead of calling on them directly, you might say something like, “I value the opinion of each of you, does anyone else have something to add.” Then, just look at the person you want to hear from. If he or she has something to say, he or she will say it if encouraged in this way. If he or she doesn’t, then you haven’t embarrassed the person.

English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers help adults and children to learn or improve their English in the UK and in other countries

As an EFL teacher, you’ll use a range of course books and materials, along with a variety of audiovisual aids, to encourage students to communicate with each other using the structures and vocabulary they’ve learned and to improve the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. A strong emphasis is placed on dialogue and role-playing, but more formal exercises, language games and literature are also used.

You can work in a variety of settings, including commercial language schools and schools and institutions of further and higher education, throughout the UK and overseas. You can also teach in industry or become self-employed. Classes are usually taught in English, even with beginners.

Types of English As a Foreign Language Teacher

Common terms used for English as a foreign language teaching are:

* Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) – traditionally used for teaching English to people who want to learn English for work or leisure reasons. TEFL can be done in the UK or abroad and usually involves short-term study.
* Teaching English as a second language (TESL) – more commonly used for people who live in an English-speaking country, but who don’t speak English as a first language. These students may be refugees or immigrants and need to learn the language in order to help them settle into society.
* Teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) – an umbrella term that commonly incorporates both TEFL and TESL (and variations such as ESOL and ESL).

Responsibilities
As an English As a Foreign Language Teacher, you’ll need to:

* plan, prepare and deliver lessons to a range of classes and age groups
* prepare and set tests, examination papers and exercises
* mark and provide appropriate feedback on oral and written work
* devise, write and produce new materials, including audio and visual resources
* organise and get involved in social and cultural activities such as sports competitions, school parties, dinners and excursions
* attend and contribute to training sessions
* participate in marketing events for the language school
* prepare information for inspection visits and other quality assurance exercises
* undertake administrative tasks, such as keeping student registers and attendance records.

Salary

* Starting salaries vary considerably, depending on the country you’re working in and your employer – they range from £14,000 to £25,000.
* With experience, and usually further qualifications, salaries can range from £27,000 to £33,000.
* For those with considerable experience and expertise, salaries can be in excess of £35,000. Higher-end salaries are usually for those who work in further and higher education institutions.

You’ll also need to consider the cost of living in the country where you’re working and extra costs, including visa fees and health insurance. Some TEFL contracts include return flights, accommodation and extra bonuses. See websites such as TEFL.org for ideas on what salaries to expect in different countries.

Contracts in the UK are often short-term or sessional and you may be paid hourly or weekly.

It’s also possible to work on a voluntary basis in some countries in exchange for board and lodging.

Working Hours

Working hours vary considerably between employers and may include evening and weekend work. You’ll spend a lot of time planning lessons, which may not be included in your normal working hours.

A lot of short-term contracts are available and part-time or part-year work is possible.

What to expect

* Most EFL teachers work overseas on fixed-term contracts of between nine months and two years. Permanent employment is possible, but it’s more common to work for several employers on a succession of contracts. Many teachers work overseas for the academic year (September to June) and then teach English in the UK peak season in July and August. Summer courses may provide free or subsidised board and lodging. Check contracts closely for details of holiday and sickness pay.
* You’ll be based in a classroom for most of the time but may take part in social activities, sometimes in the evenings and at weekends, especially on summer courses for teenagers.
* Temporary, hourly-paid contracts are also usual in adult and community education settings, and as a result, there is a lot of competition for any permanent posts that do arise.
* Self-employment and freelance work are possible. You may be able to supplement your salary by offering one-to-one tuition after school hours but check with your school first.
* You can also find teaching opportunities across the UK, particularly in towns and cities with high proportions of residents whose first language is not English.

Career prospects

Higher-level qualifications, combined with relevant experience, can lead to senior positions in schools in both the UK and abroad, such as subject leader or director of studies. However, most UK schools are quite small, so opportunities for career progression and promotion may be limited.

As more foreign students choose to study in the UK, the number of language teaching opportunities in colleges and universities also increases. These positions can offer greater stability and better pay, although competition is fierce. You’ll typically need QTLS status or further Masters courses or PhDs for these roles.

Promotion to managerial roles usually involves additional responsibilities, such as course development, administration, marketing and promotion, and less direct involvement with learners.

There’s scope for experienced teachers to go freelance, both in the UK and abroad, and to combine some of the following activities:

* teaching part time in a school, college or university
* giving private tuition on a one-to-one basis
* writing course books and other material
* teacher training and delivery and marking of examinations
* training in business English
* academic and general management
* marketing and publishing.

Paper Based Version

The course comes to you as a paper-based pack delivered by courier.

You will be given guidance through the Study Guide on the nuts and bolts of studying and submitting assignments.

Online Version

Our online course is an educational programme delivered over the internet, using our proprietary technology V.O.I.C.E. thus allowing students to access learning materials, lectures, and assignments through a digital platform. This type of learning enables participants to study remotely, typically at their own pace and time, using various digital tools like videos, presentations, discussion forums, and interactive modules.

The courses often offer flexibility in scheduling, allowing students to balance their studies with other commitments. Students can interact with instructors and peers through online communication channels like Zoom for Education and the Metaverse, and submit assignments electronically.

How does distance learning work?

To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into modules. You work through each module at your own pace and time. Once completed, submit the test, quiz, or assignment for marking. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.

When can I start the course?

The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t requireany previous experience or qualifications. All you need is a desire and motivation to succeed. You can even start right now – call and speak to one of our Course Advisors.

How long does the course take?

This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in the course brochure or online. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.

Do the courses have tutorial support?

Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.

How do I get help with my course work?

You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.

Will I get a qualification at the end?

Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.

Will I have to sit an examination?

Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.

Do I have to buy any other materials?

Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However, some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.

I’m not sure of what course I should take, Can you help?

Yes we can, it is important that you pursue a course which you will enjoy. Although we cannot make this decision for you, we employ a team of dedicated Professional Course Advisors, who will guide you towards making the right choice. What are the best apps for studying?

With so many amazing apps available on Samsung tablets it can be hard to know where to begin when it comes to studying. Here are our top 5 free study apps to get you started (click on the app names to see more):

1. Samsung Notes: Write, draw and highlight in a variety of styles and colours during your lectures and meetings

2. Google Drive: Great for collaborative working whether it’s a word document, spreadsheet or formal presentation. Find your documents in Google Drive where they are saved to the free Google cloud service.

3. myHomework: A digital planner that enables you to track classes, assignments, exams and group projects so you’ll be sure never to forget a deadline

4. Microsoft Lens: Enables you to take pictures of whiteboards, blackboards, journals and other printed documents. The app will crop out everything around it and convert it into editable and shareable text.

5. RefMe: Getting to grips with source referencing in your essays can be a bit of a headache. RefMe makes the process of finding and citing sources quicker and easier. It also has thousands of educational resources which can be a great place to start your assignment research.

Minimum technical requirement for online courses


If your course is being delivered online, please ensure you meet the requirements below.

For Windows, the minimum requirements may include a Windows operating system (such as Windows 7, 8, or 10), a processor with a speed of at least 1.6 GHz, at least 2 GB of RAM, and a graphics card with at least 128 MB of memory.

For Mac, the minimum requirements may include an Apple operating system (such as OS X 10.11 or later), a processor with a speed of at least 1.6 GHz, at least 2 GB of RAM, and a graphics card with at least 128 MB of memory.
