Whether you aim for further education, improved job prospects, or expanded knowledge, this comprehensive course allows you to prepare thoroughly for exams or careers through home study. Plus, it’s structured to be accessible and beneficial even if you have no prior knowledge in Child Development.

Understanding child development is paramount in ensuring children reach their full potential in health and overall development. The early years, in particular, are foundational, shaping a child’s future trajectory. As such, a holistic approach involving parents, health professionals, educators, and others is crucial to support children’s growth and development effectively.

Child development encompasses the acquisition of essential skills necessary for a child’s progress. These developmental milestones occur in specific stages and are vital indicators of a child’s overall well-being. Each milestone builds upon the previous one, providing the necessary foundation for subsequent developmental stages. This understanding allows caregivers and professionals to gauge a child’s progress and intervene appropriately if any delays or challenges arise.

The Level 3 Diploma Course in Child Development offers an in-depth exploration of the psychology and sociology of early childhood, catering to individuals keen on expanding their knowledge in this critical field. Through a comprehensive curriculum, students are exposed to a wide range of topics, providing a solid introduction to the subject matter. This course is invaluable for professionals working with children and those seeking to deepen their understanding of child development.

Designed to encourage student-led research, the course comprises ten modules covering various aspects of child development, from prenatal stages to adolescence. Topics include stages of pregnancy and birth, early years of development, emotional and social development, family dynamics, and theoretical approaches to childhood development. Moreover, the course delves into influential psychological theorists such as Freud, Piaget, Darwin, and Vygotsky, providing students with a nuanced understanding of the underlying processes shaping childhood development.

By examining issues surrounding child development, including social constructs, peer influences, and psychological theories, students gain valuable insights into the complexities of childhood development. Additionally, the course equips learners with essential knowledge and skills necessary for careers in social care and related child-focused disciplines. Ultimately, the Level 3 Diploma Course in Child Development empowers individuals to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to the well-being and development of children in their care.

 Course Key Topics

the Child Development (Level 3) course is divided into 10 modules.

Module 1: Defining childhood
This introductory unit considers the parameters of childhood throughout the ages, providing a useful foundation for the entire course. Students are encouraged to examine the impact of society upon the developing child.

Module 2: Pregnancy and the sociology of the family
This unit explores family patterns and the wider social context that surrounds the child. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the impact that having a baby will have upon relationships with others. Emphasis is placed upon the developing patterns of family life, and issues such as religion, family income and industrialisation are described.

Module 3: The developing baby
Foetal development from conception to the birth is described in detail in this unit. Issues associated with the post-birth period will be examined and essential practical aspects of preparation stages for the arrival of the baby will be discussed.

Module 4: Theoretical approaches to the study of childhood
This unit focuses on the theories of Charles Darwin, Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky. These will be considered and studied in depth, together with an assessment of the practical contribution their writings have made in practical terms to the understanding of child development and the raising of children nowadays.

Module 5: Emotional development
The significance of the emotional development of children will be discussed, together with a presentation of the writings of Sigmund Freud and John Bowlby. The implications of the theories of both men will be discussed in relation to modern day parenting and day care.

Module 6: Day-care
Many parents are finding that day care for babies and young children is essential so that careers can be continued. This may be an important part of parenting routine, and the reactions of children to day care will be examined in this unit. The challenges of assessing day care and the implications of flawed research in this area will be discussed. The importance of good quality care will be emphasised and students will be encouraged to identify those aspects of care that they feel are beneficial and important to both the physical, intellectual and social development of children in their early years.

Module 7: The developing self – the social development of children
In this unit, the development of the self concept will be discussed. Students will gain knowledge of identifying the important aspects of development of the self concept in the early years and also the risk factors that can impact upon healthy self development. Children do not grow up in isolation; their peers can importantly influence their development. All children are likely to be involved in the school system. The importance of positive interaction with others in a school setting and the impact (both positive and negative) of peer relationships in childhood will be discussed. Issues such as bullying will be explored in this module and students are encouraged to consider strategies that can be developed to foster successful school interaction.

Module 8: The development of play
The importance of play to the developing child will be explained, together with parental issues in relation to play. The different types and functions of play throughout the life cycle will be examined. Issues such as play and socio-economic class and gender differences will be considered so that students may gain understanding of the impact of play on all aspects of development.

Module 9: Development in adolescence
The period of adolescence is a time of transition, and great changes in the life of the child will be apparent. Adolescence is sometimes identified as a negative period in the life of the child but it is the aim of this section of the course to explore both the physical and emotional changes of adolescence, and to explore not only the negative impact of adolescence but also the positive impact that adolescence can have.

Module 10: Developmental Problems
Most children develop normally but there are many children that do have problems with development. This unit covers the professionals working in the field of Child Development and Developmental Milestones.

Career Profile - Early Years Teacher

Career Profile

Early years teachers work in settings including nurseries and preschools and play an important role in the early development of young children

As an early years teacher (EYT), you’ll work with children aged 0-5 years, nurturing and supporting their learning and development.

Your aim will be to provide a safe and secure environment for them where you’ll use resources to plan activities and help them to meet early learning goals within knowledge, skills and understanding. You’ll need to record observations and summarise achievements and liaise with parents, staff and other educational professionals.

You can find work as an early years teacher in settings such as day nurseries, preschools and playgroups. You could also work within the reception year/early years foundation stage (EYFS) of an independent school, academy or free school.

It’s worth noting that to work in a local authority maintained school you’ll need a separate qualification which gives you qualified teacher status (QTS). Find out more about being a primary school teacher.

Responsibilities
As an Early Years Teacher, you’ll need to:

* motivate and stimulate a child’s learning abilities, often encouraging learning through experience
* provide pastoral care and support to children within a secure learning environment
* aid the development of a child’s personal, social, language and physical coordination abilities
* develop and produce visual aids and teaching resources
* encourage mathematical and creative development through stories, songs, games, drawing and imaginative play
* help children develop curiosity and knowledge
* work with others, including teaching assistants and nursery nurses as well as volunteer helpers, to plan and coordinate work both indoors and outdoors
* share knowledge gained with other practitioners and build and maintain relationships with parents
* observe, assess and record each child’s progress
* ensure the health and safety of children and staff is maintained during all activities, both inside and outside the setting
* attend staff meetings and staff training days
* keep up to date with changes in the curriculum and developments in best practice.

You’ll need to make sure the activities you plan and carry out in any setting meet the requirements of the relevant educational framework:

* Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in England
* The Early Years Framework in Scotland
* Education and Skills in Wales
* Early Years Education in Northern Ireland.

Salary

* Pay and conditions are set by individual employers, so vary depending on the setting in which you work.
* Starting salaries may be in the region of £18,000 to £20,000 with varying levels of responsibility.
* Typically once you have some experience you’ll be able to achieve salaries ranging from £22,000 to £38,000. Roles at the top end of this bracket will often include supervisory or management duties.
* At the moment, it is difficult to achieve salaries at the same levels as those with qualified teacher status (QTS) as pay is not regulated in the same way. Keep up to date with education press and news from the Department for Education (DfE) in case there are any changes or consultations that relate to this.

Income figures are intended as a guide only.

Working Hours

Hours vary depending on your setting and may be up to 40 hours a week. Nurseries can be open from 7.30am until 6.30pm, so it’s likely you’ll need to cover shifts within that period. Hours within a school are typically more regular from around 8.30am to 3.30/4pm.

Extra hours may be required for staff meetings, inspections and parent consultations. Depending on the setting in which you work, you may also need to spend additional time on planning and preparation for activities or lessons.

Part-time hours, temporary work, career break opportunities and job shares are all available. It is also possible to get supply teaching or bank staff roles.

What to expect

* You’ll work as part of a team with other childcare professionals. These can vary depending on the setting but include nursery practitioners and teaching assistants.
* The paperwork involved in the job can often mean some evening and weekend work at home.
* Positions are available throughout the UK, although there are more opportunities in towns and cities.
* Within a nursery setting you’ll typically be allocated a room and age range, e.g. toddler, pre-school, etc. although you could be moved around as needed for cover. In a school you’ll usually be based in your own classroom.
* Men are currently under-represented within early years provision. This is widely recognised and there are campaigns in place, such as Men in the Early Years (MITEY), which encourage more men to consider it as a career and helps settings recruit men to the roles.
* Travel during the working day is rare, except to attend occasional home visits or to go on school trips. Absence from home overnight and overseas work or travel are unlikely.

Skills

You’ll need to have:

* excellent communication and listening skills
* good organisational skills to plan the day and respond to the different needs of the children you teach
* the ability to inspire and enthuse young children
* resourcefulness, patience and a caring nature
* an understanding of the needs and feelings of children
* ability to work independently with children, as well as being able to work in the wider nursery/school team
* a sense of humour and the ability to keep things in perspective
* ideas and creativity to plan resources and carry out activities such as dance, drama, music, arts and crafts
* stamina to keep up with the needs and energy of a large group of lively children
* attention to detail for carrying out observations and reporting back to parents and other professionals.

Career prospects

Once you’ve gained experience as an early years teacher, there may be opportunities to move into a management role. This could be a staff supervisory role or managing a nursery or group of nurseries. You may also choose to go on to open your own nursery but you’ll need substantial experience as well as business management skills and knowledge.

With additional qualifications and experience, it’s possible to specialise in certain areas, such as special educational needs (SEN).

You can do further training to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS) in order to work as a primary school teacher or secondary school teacher or to work as an early years teacher in a maintained school. Different training routes are available, with many graduate options taking one year to complete. With further training, it may also be possible to become a play therapist.

Working as an early years teacher can also lead to local authority advisory roles or into roles involving the mentoring and assessing of early years teachers and other trainees.

Grading & How it Works

The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.

This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.

Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.

We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.
