Career Profile
As a clinical scientist working in audiology, you’ll assess, diagnose and manage patients who have hearing, balance and tinnitus problems
Work involves identifying and assessing hearing and balance disorders through administering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and recommending and providing appropriate treatment and rehabilitation.
Types of Clinical Scientist, Audiology
The main areas of work are:
* adult assessment and rehabilitation
* paediatrics
* research and development
* special needs groups, e.g. patients with multi-sensory impairment
* teaching.
Responsibilities
As an Clinical Scientist, Audiology, you’ll need to:
* administer auditory tests for babies, children and adults
* interpret and report on test results
* develop and improve test techniques
* recommend individual patient care management plans
* advise on the selection, fitting and evaluation of hearing aids
* research new advances in hearing aid technology, such as digital hearing aids
* test and maintain implanted devices, such as cochlear implants
* operate audiometric equipment
* conduct research into disorders affecting hearing and balance
* counsel patients and help with their rehabilitation
* teach and train other healthcare professionals
* work as part of a multidisciplinary team of specialists, which may include ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons and other hospital specialists, such as neurologists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, paediatricians and teachers of hearing-impaired people
* manage audiology services, including monitoring and improving the quality of service provided.
Your responsibilities will vary depending on your level of experience. Those with more experience generally carry out the non-routine aspects of audiology, involving complex hearing and balance investigations that require a high level of responsibility and competence.
Salary
* Jobs in the NHS are usually covered by the Agenda for Change (AfC) pay rates consisting of nine pay bands. Trainee clinical scientists are usually employed at Band 6, starting at £33,706.
* Once qualified, you’re likely to be employed on Band 7 – £41,659 to £47,672.
* Salaries for principal and consultant scientists range from £48,526 (Band 8) to £ £109,475 (Band 9), depending on your experience and training.
Those working in London and the surrounding areas may receive a high-cost area supplement of between 5% and 20% of their basic salary.
Salaries for jobs outside the NHS may vary.
Working Hours
You’ll usually work a standard 37.5 hour week. In some roles this may include occasional weekends.
Part-time work is possible.
What to expect
* You’ll usually work in a hospital consultation room, although it’s possible to work in universities in a research or teaching role. You’ll need to enjoy working as part of a healthcare team and feel comfortable working with patients who may be in distress. You’ll need to combine both a scientific and patient-focused approach to your work.
* Jobs are available in hospitals throughout the UK.
* During training, there’s an opportunity to experience work in a variety of hospital laboratories. You may have to travel to other training centres as part of the programme rotations. As the centres may be in other parts of the country, you could have to stay there for a few weeks at a time. You’ll also have to travel to university to complete an accredited part-time Masters degree.
* Once qualified, you won’t usually have to travel, but may need to visit other hospitals or clinics. At a senior level, however, you’ll be expected to travel to local and national meetings and events, to provide training and give presentations.
* Audiology is a rapidly developing field as the number of people suffering from significant hearing loss increases.

There is a structured career path within the NHS. Once qualified, you can progress through the grades by gaining experience and completing further training, study and research. Promotion is based on merit and you may need to move to other hospitals to make the most of available opportunities.
As you gain experience, it’s usual to specialise in a particular area of audiology such as:

* bone-anchored hearing devices
* cochlear implants

As your career develops, you’re likely to take on a more supervisory role with responsibility for the work of your department. Progression to consultant involves further training via the HSST programme. Promotion to deputy head or head of department is likely to involve the management of a large department or major departmental section. Course Qualifications
Course QualificationsThis is a dual-certification course and you will therefore receive two qualifications. This course is certified by Open Learning College via the Open Pathway Accreditation Programme & NCFE.
This course leads to a Level 3 for successful learners, this means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England & Wales.
This qualification has been developed by Open Learning College to meet the specific needs of our learners and has been accredited by NCFE demonstrating the quality and rigor.
NCFE is an awarding organisation recognised by the qualification regulators for England (Ofqual), Wales (Qualifications Wales) and Northern Ireland (CCEA Regulation). This is an unregulated qualification and is not a nationally recognised qualification.
On completion of the Customised Qualification, learners will receive a certificate of achievement. The certificate is evidence of the knowledge and skills gained by completing the qualification.
This qualification has been accredited by NCFE under the Customised Qualification and the certificate of achievement.
1. You will receive your accreditation directly from NCFE, once you have successfully completed your course (certification fees are included in the course fee).
2. You will receive the Open Pathway Accreditation Diploma (OPA.dip) from Open Learning College.
Grading & How it Works
The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.
This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.
Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.
We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.

How does distance learning work?

The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t requireany previous experience or qualifications. How long does the course take?
This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in the course brochure or online. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.
Do the courses have tutorial support?
Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.
If I fail an assignment can I retake it?
Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.
How do I get help with my course work?
You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.
Will I get a qualification at the end?
Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.
Will I have to sit an examination?
Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.
Do I have to buy any other materials?
Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However, some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
