Its indirect impact is even greater, generating 15,580.9 billion US dollars in revenue and supporting over 274,000,000 jobs in the wider economy such as retail, catering and banking. The career opportunities are vast and varied.

This course will provide an overview of the Travel and Tourism industry. It can be a platform for further study at level 4; a starting point to enter the industry; or simply a source of information for anyone who loves to travel.

 Course Key Topics

the Travel and Tourism (Level 3) course is divided into 10 modules.

Module 1: Investigating Travel and Tourism
The Travel and Tourism industry is both extensive and dynamic. In this introductory unit you will examine how expansive the industry actually is and gain an understanding of the multiple elements and their dependency on each other. You will study the history and development of the industry and how it is meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

Module 2: People in the Travel and Tourism Industry
In this unit you will explore the many stakeholders within the Travel and Tourism sector including government agencies; regulatory bodies; businesses; employees and consumers. You will investigate the role of the main stakeholders and how they work inter-dependently.

You will understand the role of human resource management in the recruitment, management and training of a variety of key employment roles. In addition you will start to appreciate the array of unique employment opportunities and working practices within the industry such as resort representatives and cruise ship employees.

Module 3: Sustainable Tourism
After centuries of ad-hoc, consumer driven planning of travel modes and tourism destinations, both governments and the travel and tourism sector now realise that planning must be sustainable.

Sustainable Tourism takes into account the economic, social, cultural and environmental effects of tourism both at a local and global level. You will learn the basic principles of sustainable tourism and analyse its impact by examining case studies.

Module 4: Tourism in the United Kingdom
In this unit you will learn about the differences between domestic, international, outbound and inbound tourism. You will understand how travel and tourism has developed within the United Kingdom from the early days of simple seaside or spa holidays to today’s plethora of choices. You will understand how the United Kingdom’s natural resources and unique heritage has shaped the industry and consider the challenges of their preservation and maintenance.

Module 5: European Destinations
In this unit you will identify the main tourist destinations within the European continent and understand how and why they developed.

As with the United Kingdom, you will examine the relationship between Europe’s natural landscape and cultural heritage and tourism. In addition, you will explore the development and importance of leisure and sport tourism in Europe and the growing popularity of urban destinations.

Module 6: Long Haul Destinations
In this unit you will start by exploring how engineering and technology has opened up the world to travellers, firstly by transport modes and then by telecommunication innovations. You will see how modern technologies have been key to the development of long haul destinations.

Module 7: The Role of the Travel Agency
In this unit you will learn about the historical development of travel agencies and how their role is changing due to technological advances.

You will understand how travel agencies are managed and regulated along with their relationship with tour operators. You will be able to differentiate between retail and business travel agencies and understand the differences in management and operations.

Module 8: Customer Service
The Travel and Tourism industry is a ‘people orientated’ industry: to keep in business, travel and tourism businesses must ‘keep the customer satisfied’. Business travellers demand efficient, polite service in order to conduct their own business goals effectively. The day tripper or holiday maker want relaxation, enrichment or fun, whatever their motivation they will expect courteous, enthusiastic customer service. With so much choice now available, but often of a similar kind, customer service is the value added that can draw the consumers in.

In this unit you will explore how businesses can develop and maintain a customer service culture and clear customer service standards. You will understand the importance of teams and team building and the important role of the leader/ manager.

Module 9: Promotion in Travel and Tourism
Well planned, motivating promotion and marketing is essential for success in travel and tourism in the 21st century. You will learn about the traditional methods of promotion and advertising; the role of public relations and the impact of social media. In addition, you will consider the influence that television and film has on tourist motivation. The increasing involvement of national governments and tourist boards will be evaluated.

Module 10: Current Trends and Future Prospects
In this ultimate unit you will consider a range of issues that face the Travel and Tourism industry today and, of which, is likely to have a continuing impact in the future. You will examine:

  • Telecommunications.
  • Demographic changes and their impact.
  • Economic changes and their impact.
  • Disaster management.

Career Profile - Travel Agency Manager

Career Profile

Travel agency managers work in retail travel outlets, promoting and selling holidays and travel-related products

As a travel agency manager, you may manage a small independent business or a large chain. Some agencies specialise in business travel or offer a detailed knowledge of specific locations or travel products.

Your responsibilities will usually include the daily operational management of the agency, sales targets and development, staffing and financial management.

You’ll need to ensure the agency delivers specialist, professional travel advice and offers a good range of competitive travel products to meet the demands of the customer. This will usually include an online booking service and tailor-made trips.

Responsibilities
As a Travel Agency Manager, you’ll need to:

* promote and market the business, sometimes to new or niche markets
* manage budgets and maintain statistical and financial records
* sell travel products and tour packages
* source products and destinations to meet consumer demands for bespoke travel and sustainable tourism
* deliver and exceed branch performance and productivity
* take part in familiarisation visits to new destinations, to gather information on issues and amenities of interest to consumers
* liaise with travel partners, including airlines and hotels, to manage bookings and schedules, often a year in advance
* deal with customer enquiries and aim to meet their expectations
* provide sales reports to head office
* implement alternative and innovative ideas for achieving new business
* oversee the smooth, efficient running of the business
* motivate the sales team to hit and exceed their targets and ensure company profitability
* meet regularly with team leaders to give them sales figures and plan how they approach their work
* meet company directors who advise on strategy and find out about any local issues and future trends
* oversee the recruitment, selection and retention of staff as well as payroll matters and staff training
* organise incentives, bonus schemes and competitions
* deal with disciplinary matters and customer complaints.

Salary

* Starting salaries range from £20,000 to £28,000, depending on the company’s size, location and market.
* With experience, travel agency managers can earn up to £40,000.
* In senior-level positions, salaries are generally between £40,000 and £50,000.

Salaries vary greatly between agencies, with larger chains normally paying higher rates. You can enhance your earnings through various incentives and performance bonuses. Concessions for personal holidays and travel are also common.

Income figures are intended as a guide only.

Working Hours

Working hours typically include a Saturday, which is classed as a normal working day. You’ll usually have to coordinate cover over seven days a week, on a five-day day rota system. Part-time work is available.

You may occasionally need to work evenings when attending promotions and conferences.

If the travel agency is located in a call centre, shift work will usually be required.

What to expect

Jobs are available in most areas of the UK, with major travel agencies having a high street presence. Self-employment or freelance work is an option due to the rise in popularity of online bookings and tailor-made package tours.
The industry can experience downturns and upturns in equal measure, depending on the economic climate.
There is an emphasis on meeting sales and productivity targets.
Uniforms and a smart appearance are required in most organisations.
There is occasional travel within a working day, plus overseas travel.

Skills

You’ll need to have:

good communication skills
sales and customer-service skills
diplomacy and tact
innovation and energy
commitment to people management
the ability to lead and motivate a team
sound judgement with attention to detail
competent IT skills
strong organisational skills
resilience to cope with long hours and pressure at peak times
a genuine interest in travel
an awareness of the current trends in travel (e.g. sustainable tourism) and knowledge of popular and upcoming destinations is also important.

Career prospects

Generally, the role of a travel agency manager offers a lot of scope for variety and progression. It may be necessary to relocate or switch companies in order to achieve this.

In larger companies, it’s often possible to move up the management ladder to area manager roles or move into another area of the business such as PR, human resources or marketing.

Typically, as a new entrant, you’ll need to gain two-to-three years’ experience as a sales consultant before being able to apply for a team leader position and a further two-to-three years’ experience before applying for branch management roles.

By specialising in a few chosen destinations, opportunities may arise to relocate or spend time working abroad where you could forge links with travel partners overseas. Alternatively, you could move into education tourism, helping students learn skills and gain knowledge in educational institutions around the world. Alternatively you could teach tourism at an FE college or university.

The experience you gain as a travel agency manager also opens up opportunities in the wider tourism industry including hotels and leisure facilities, airlines and cruise ships.

Grading & How it Works

The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.

This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.

Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.

We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.
