As a business development manager, you’ll identify new business opportunities in order to generate revenue, improve profitability and help the business grow
Your work can involve careful strategic planning and positioning in the appropriate markets, or enhancing the operation of the business, its position or reputation in some way.
You may have a single role in the organisation or lead a team of staff. Your work will often reach across all areas of the business.
Types of business management
Business development can be applied to almost all types of business, but you may choose to specialise in a certain sector, such as:
* construction
* education
* finance
* healthcare
* IT
* manufacturing
* telecommunications.
Alternatively, you may work across many different businesses, but with a specific focus on either:
* B2B (business to business)
* B2C (business to consumer).
Responsibilities
As a business development manager, you’ll need to:
* research and identify new business opportunities – including new markets, growth areas, trends, customers, partnerships, products and services – or new ways of reaching existing markets
* seek out the appropriate contact in an organisation
* generate leads and cold call prospective customers
* meet with customers/clients face-to-face or over the phone
* foster and develop relationships with customers, clients, partners, sponsors and donors so that you can generate repeat business as well as finding new opportunities
* understand the needs of your customers and be able to respond effectively with a plan of how to meet these
* think strategically – seeing the bigger picture and setting aims and objectives in order to develop and improve the business and reach new audiences
* work strategically – carrying out necessary planning in order to implement operational changes
* draw up client contracts – depending on the size of company, this task may be completed by someone else or agreements may not be as formal
* lead on and support bid-writing for new grants and contracts where appropriate
* have a good understanding of the businesses’ products or services and be able to advise others about them
* ensure staff are on board throughout the organisation, and understand the need for change and what is required of them
* train members of your team, arranging external training where appropriate
* discuss promotional strategy and activities with the marketing department
* liaise with the finance team, warehousing and logistics departments as appropriate
* seek ways of improving the way the business operates

Salary
* Salaries for business development graduates are in the region of £23,000 to £33,000.
* At mid-management level with several years’ experience, you can expect to earn between £38,000 and £60,000, depending on the region and sector you work in.
* As a senior business development manager or business development director, it’s possible to earn in excess of £80,000.
Salaries can vary significantly based on a range of factors such as the industry you work in, company size and location, and your skills, experience and level of responsibility.
Salaries in London, for example, are usually higher, as well as in major cities such as Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester. Salaries are usually lower in small towns and rural areas. You are likely to earn more if you work in the technology, finance or professional services industries.
To reach the higher end of the pay scale, you will need an excellent track record of successfully leading business development initiatives, and gaining and retaining new business and partnerships.
It’s common for performance-related bonuses to be paid. These can significantly increase your earnings. Some jobs will be advertised with ‘uncapped commission’. Jobs are often advertised with a basic salary and a higher on-target earnings (OTE) figure.

Working Hours
You’ll usually work a regular 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday week, though you may on occasion have to work longer to meet a project deadline or when attending an event or conference.

* It can be challenging trying to create new business opportunities, in addition to the constant pressure of meeting or exceeding targets. However, business development is quite a creative role and can be very satisfying.
* You may have responsibility for managing a team and their output.
* Jobs are available throughout the UK in all types of businesses and organisations. Opportunities tend to be with larger companies. In smaller companies, the role is usually carried out as part of broader role covering several functions.
* Depending on the type of business, overnight or overseas travel may be required.

Business management is carried out across many sectors, in most towns and cities, and within many different types of organisation. As a result, there are many possibilities for career development.
You could choose to specialise in a particular sector, such as IT or healthcare, or in a particular business areas such as sales or marketing.
You may progress to the role of senior business development manager, perhaps being responsible for a bigger team or department, with higher targets. With enough experience, you could reach director level with strategic responsibility for income and growth.
Working overseas is possible if you work for an international company. You may have the option of travelling and working for short periods in the overseas divisions of your company, or you could apply for a permanent overseas transfer or to a new company.

Course QualificationsThis is a dual-certification course and you will therefore receive two qualifications. This course is certified by Open Learning College via the Open Pathway Accreditation Programme.
This course leads to a Level 3 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England.

How does distance learning work?
To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into modules. You work through each module at your own pace and time. How long does the course take?

Do the courses have tutorial support?
Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.
If I fail an assignment can I retake it?
Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.
How do I get help with my course work?
You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.
Will I get a qualification at the end?
Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.
Will I have to sit an examination?
Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.
Do I have to buy any other materials?
Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However, some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
