 Course Key Topics

the Human Resources (Level 3) course is divided into 10 modules.

Module 1: Introduction to Human Resource Management (HRM)
The first module of the diploma will help us to identify exactly what is meant when we use the term HRM. We will explore the distinctions between the practices of HRM and Personnel Management. In this module we will explore;

  • The concept is traced from its early development through to the present day.
  • The two “schools” of HRM are then discussed and the differences between them identified.
  • This module is concluded by a brief consideration of the European context.

Module 2: The modern HRM environment
In the second module of the diploma we will analyse the factors surrounding the present HRM environment. We will do this by considering a number of factors including the following;

  • Globalisation
  • Recent public sector developments
  • The Labour market
  • Vocation training and education

By the conclusion of this module you will have acquired a sound knowledge of the underlying background of HRM and its place in the World today.

Module 3: The contract of employment
In the 3rd Module of this diploma we will consider the role and importance of the contract of employment. The contract of employment is something which is frequently overlooked in HRM courses. In this module learners will examine a number of important areas including;

  • The nature of the contract of employment
  • The importance of establishing the status of the worker
  • The various criteria used in order to determine this question
  • The influence of European law upon this area

The module also contains a number of case based exercises which will assist the learner in testing their understanding as they progress through the module.

Module 4: Contents of the contract of employment
In the fourth module of this course we will now consider the contents of the contract and the relative importance of different terms. Having established the importance of contracts of employment, the student will explore the following points in this module;

  • Mutual duties of employer and employee
  • Distinctions between different contractual terms
  • The concept of vicarious liability

Module 5: Termination of the contract of employment
This fifth module of the diploma examines the various routes by which the contract of employment can come be terminated. In this module we explore dismissal and unfair dismissal. In addition the module explores the following;

  • The basic considerations affecting redundancy
  • The concept of frustration
  • The common law view of dismissal

Module 6: Discrimination in Employment
This sixth module of the diploma explores the issue of discrimination in Employment. Not only the traditional areas of discrimination such as racial and sexual discrimination, but also considers forms of discrimination that are more recent developments including;

  • Disability Discrimination
  • Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation

The entire area is placed within the context of European and domestic law.

Module 7: Trade Union and Industrial Conflict
In the seventh module of the diploma, learners will explore the role and function of Trade Unions and Industrial Conflict and its implications for Human Resources. In particular we will examine the following;

  • What exactly do we mean by the term “trade union”?
  • How have these bodies developed throughout the course of history
  • The legal status afforded to trades unions
  • An outline of the area of industrial conflict

Module 8: Motivational techniques
In the eighth topic of the HR diploma course we will explore motivational techniques that can be used for success in Human Resources. The focus of the module is on behavioural scientific techniques. In this module we will explore the following;

  • What do we mean when we use the term “motivation”?
  • A consideration of some of the barriers to motivation
  • An analysis of the different “schools” of motivation i.e. content and process
  • A detailed look at the work of leading theorists in this area

Module 9: Key human resource processes
In this penultimate module of the diploma in Human Resources we will explore key human resource areas that are among the main processes of HR. Many of these processes in turn are our daily “bread and butter” of the HRM specialist and they include;

  • Recruitment and selection
  • Learning organisations
  • Performance management
  • Appraisal.

Module 10: Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics
In this final module of the diploma, we explore two relatively new concepts to Human Resources. In this module we will consider the potential responses by the HRM specialist to concerns such as environmental awareness and the pressures of national and international governments that may be applied that will affect the HR specialist. The module proposes a number of steps which a responsible HRM specialist may espouse in order to display both its “green” and ethical credentials in the 21st century.

Career Profile - Human Resources Officer

Career Profile

As an human resources (HR) officer, your aim is to ensure that the organisation you work for can meet its objectives by having the right workforce in place

You’ll achieve this by selectively hiring people with the right skills and experience.

You may help provide training and development opportunities for employees, and guidance around issues such as performance and progression, and disciplinary measures where they arise.

Types of Human Resources Work

HR officers are involved in a range of activities whatever the size or type of business. These cover areas such as:

* conditions of employment
* equality and diversity
* negotiation with external work-related agencies
* pay and rewards
* recruitment and retention
* working practices.

It’s possible to work in either a generalist role, covering the full range of HR work, or to specialise in a particular area.

Responsibilities
As an Human Resources Officer, you’ll need to:

* have a clear understanding of your employer’s business objectives and be able to devise and implement policies that support them
* write and develop job descriptions, person specifications and job adverts
* manage the application process – check application forms, shortlist, interview, select successful candidate/s and inform unsuccessful ones
* appoint, develop and retain the right staff
* ensure that prospective staff have the right to work at the organisation
* plan and sometimes deliver training, including new staff inductions
* deal with staff welfare and administration-centred activities
* advise on pay and other benefits
* undertake salary reviews and manage redundancy programmes
* carry out strategy and planning activities and * develop strategies to meet immediate and long-term staff requirements
develop and implement policies on issues such as working conditions, performance management, equal opportunities, disciplinary procedures and absence management
* advise line managers in how to implement policies and procedures
* liaise with a range of people involved in policy areas such as staff performance and health and safety
* promote equality and diversity as part of the culture of the organisation
* negotiate with staff and their representatives (e.g. trade union officials) on issues relating to pay and conditions, contracts and redundancy
* prepare staff handbooks, administer payroll and maintain employee records
* interpret and advise on employment law
* deal with grievances and implement disciplinary procedures
* analyse training needs in conjunction with departmental managers.

Salary

* Starting salaries for HR administrators range from £18,000 to £23,000.
* Salaries for HR officers/advisers are around £24,000 to £35,000.
* HR managers can earn around £35,000 to £55,000.
* Salaries for HR directors typically range from around £55,000 to in excess of £80,000.

Salaries within HR can vary considerably between employers and depend on a range of factors, including experience, skills, qualifications, location, sector and type of employer, level of responsibility and seniority.

Salaries in local government and charities are likely to be lower than in sectors such as banking and financial services. Having CIPD-accredited qualifications and chartered membership can help with career prospects.

Income data from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Reed Human Resources 2021 Salary Guide. Figures are intended as a guide only.

Working Hours

You’ll generally work a standard 37-hour week, Monday to Friday, but hours could sometimes include shift or weekend work. There may also be a requirement to work extra hours to meet deadlines.

Part-time and job-share positions and opportunities for flexible working may be available.

What to expect

The work is mainly office based but may involve travel to other sites such as factories, warehouses, hotels, government departments or retail outlets, depending on the type and structure of the employer.
Self-employment or freelance work is sometimes possible as organisations increasingly buy in expertise in particular areas on a short-term basis if provision is not available in-house. HR consultancy is becoming more common due to the rise in outsourcing HR practices. These opportunities are usually for those with experience in the field (a CIPD qualification is essential), possibly with a management or HR consultancy background.
Opportunities exist throughout the UK, with most jobs available in larger towns and cities. Some specialist roles are more likely to be found in the headquarters of an organisation, usually in a major city.
The type of organisation, structure of the HR department and your own area of work determine the opportunities for travel both within the UK and elsewhere. Careers can be international, even at a junior level.

Skills

You’ll need to have:

* business awareness and management skills
* interpersonal skills to form effective working relationships with people at all levels
* IT and numeracy skills, with strong IT skills required if managing/operating computerised payroll and benefits systems
* organisational and planning skills
* the ability to analyse, interpret and explain employment law
* integrity and approachability, as managers and staff must feel able to discuss sensitive and confidential issues with you
* curiosity and a willingness to challenge organisational culture where necessary
* teamworking skills and the ability to collaborate well with others
* the ability to compile and interpret statistical data and communicate it in a professional and understandable manner
* influencing and negotiating skills to implement personnel policies
* the ability to work well under pressure
* the ability to juggle multiple tasks and to prioritise your workload
* potential to handle a leadership role
* cultural awareness and language skills can be useful if working overseas.

Career prospects

New graduates are likely to begin their human resources career by working in a general HR role. The choice is usually then to either continue to enjoy the breadth of this work and remain in this environment or to move into a more specialist HR role, in areas such as:

* diversity and inclusion
* employee engagement
* employee relations
* employment law
* learning, training and development
* organisation development
* performance and reward
* recruitment and talent planning.

These specialist roles are more likely to be found in the headquarters of major organisations, so you may need to move job to find a role that suits you and your career aims.

Promotion depends on ability. With a combination of experience and CIPD qualifications, you can move into an HR management role with responsibility for a number of HR officers. You may find yourself overseeing an area such as recruitment and training or advising managers on a range of HR issues.

Grading & How it Works

The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.

This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.

Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.

We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.
