Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) perform many of the same tasks as regular teaching assistants, but with a significant difference – they shoulder greater responsibility within the classroom. As an HLTA, you’ll be entrusted to step in when a teacher needs to be absent, ensuring continuity in learning until a qualified teacher can provide cover.
Achieving HLTA status represents a recognized path for advancement among school support staff. HLTAs collaborate closely with teachers to elevate educational standards and empower each student to realize their full potential.
This Level 4 qualification, approved by Ofqual and nationally recognized, is tailored for individuals currently working in teaching assistant roles who aspire to become HLTAs and demonstrate their capability to attain HLTA status.

The HLTA professional standards outline precise expectations for teaching assistants progressing towards HLTA status, comprising 33 standards categorized into three core domains:
- Standards 1-7: Professional Attributes: These standards delineate the attitudes, values, and dedication expected of HLTAs.
- Standards 8-16: Professional Knowledge and Understanding: These standards delineate the knowledge and competencies essential for HLTAs to effectively collaborate with teachers as integral members of the educational team.
- Standards 17-33: Professional Skills: These standards outline expectations for planning, monitoring, managing, and evaluating learning within the framework of guidance and supervision established by the assigned teacher and the school’s Head Teacher.

Career Profile
As a teaching assistant (TA), you’ll support pupils in their educational, emotional and social development either individually, in groups or as a whole class
You’ll also support the teacher by undertaking duties that will free up their time for teaching, such as preparing the classroom for lessons, making resources and creating displays of children’s work.
Types of Teaching Assistants
Some TAs work exclusively with pupils who have special educational needs (SEN) or other specific needs.
Responsibilities
Your duties will depend on your experience, training and TA status. Generally, you’ll need to:
* make sure that the pupils you support can engage in learning and stay on task during the lesson or activity so that they can become independent learners
* support the social and emotional development of pupils, reporting any issues when required
support the teacher in managing challenging pupil behaviour and promoting positive behaviour
* listen to pupils read and read to pupils as a class, group or one-to-one
* monitor and record pupils’ progress and provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers
* carry out administrative duties, such as preparing the classroom and clearing away after class to ensure effective teaching can take place
* look after pupils who have had accidents, administering first aid where necessary, and those who need help dressing or are upset
* make resources for use by teachers and pupils and create art displays of pupils’ artwork
* provide support outside of your normal classes, such as helping during exams, covering TA absences or going on school trips
* help with extra-curricular activity such as breakfast and after-school clubs, homework club, revision sessions or playtime and lunchtime duties.
As a higher level teaching assistant you’ll also need to:
* deliver tailored teaching activities to pupils on either a one-to-one basis or in small groups
* lead on certain class activities under the direction of the teacher
take classes on your own, giving teachers time to plan and mark work
* help with the planning of lessons
* supervise other support staff
* coordinate specific areas of teaching support.
With experience, you could also take on a specialism such as literacy, numeracy or SEN. You may also specialise in working with children whose first language is not English if you are bilingual.
Salary
* Starting salaries for full-time, permanent TAs (level 1) are typically around £18,300.
* With increased responsibility (level 2), you can expect to earn £18,880 to £19,000.
* Experienced TAs (level 3) and those with additional specialisms or SEN responsibilities can earn £19,260 to £25,000.

Working hours
Although you’ll typically work normal office hours, you may have to do shifts or be on call. As crimes may happen at any time, you must be prepared to work evenings and weekends to either process and investigate scenes of crimes or to examine the findings from them.
What to expect
* You’ll be supporting pupils who may have a range of learning and/or behavioural difficulties.
* You’ll be busy with a variety of tasks on any given day, and may be asked to offer extra support at short notice. There is an expectation to get stuck in and provide help as and when it’s needed.
* Depending on your role you may need to provide personal care to pupils and help with lifting or moving them where required.
* The teaching assistant role can be challenging but watching pupils progress can also be extremely rewarding.
* The majority of your work will be in the classroom, but you may also be involved in lunchtime supervision, outdoor activities and school trips.

You’ll need to have:

Career prospects
Although entry into the profession is competitive, career prospects are generally good. Promotion is based on experience, responsibility and appraisal reports. Being geographically mobile can be helpful when looking for new roles.
You’ll usually need to get between two and five years’ experience after entry to be able to progress to the role of reporting officer. This involves taking on your own cases, dealing directly with the police and bringing together evidence into a statement. You may need to give evidence in court as an expert witness.
With further experience you could go on to become a casework examiner, responsible for coordinating work in your area of expertise. You would supervise the work of others, visit scenes of crime, attend conferences and may also carry out research and publish articles.
There’s scope to move into a managerial position, but progression often depends on developing an area of expertise. Alternatively, you could follow a career in research.

The Higher Level Teaching Assistants (Level 4) course at Open Learning College is designed to provide a comprehensive and flexible learning experience. Unlike traditional exam-based courses, our course is marked through a process of continuous assessment, which is guided by your personal tutor.
This means that you won’t have to worry about memorising information for a final exam. Instead, you will have the opportunity to learn at your own pace and apply your knowledge through practical assignments and quizzes at the end of each module. Our online platform allows you to access the course from anywhere and at any time, and you can also choose to receive the course materials by post.
When you complete each module, you will submit your assignments and quizzes online for marking. While there is no word count requirement for these assignments, we do expect well-thought-out and complete answers. Your tutor will provide constructive feedback and guidance on areas for improvement to help you achieve your best performance.
Once your assignments have been verified and assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of achievement from the Open Learning College. This certificate confirms that you have met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the Higher Level Teaching Assistants (Level 4), and demonstrates your competency and knowledge in this field.

We recommend you spend approximately 360 hours of your time studying for Higher Level Teaching Assistants (Level 4) course. The pace of study is completely up to you. To give an example, if you dedicate 8 hours per week to study, it would take you one year to complete but if you could spare 15 hours a week you could complete it in six months.

Course QualificationsThis is a dual-certification course and you will therefore receive two qualifications. This course is certified by Open Learning College via the Open Pathway Accreditation Programme.
This course leads to a Level 4 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 4 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England.
This qualification has been developed by Open Learning College to meet the specific needs of our learners and has been accredited by CPD demonstrating the learning activity has reached the required Continuing Professional Development standards and benchmarks.

Grading & How it Works
The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.
This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.
Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.
We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.

How does distance learning work?
To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into modules. You work through each module at your own pace and time. Once completed, submit the test, quiz, or assignment for marking. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.
When can I start the course?
The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t requireany previous experience or qualifications. All you need is a desire and motivation to succeed. You can even start right now – call and speak to one of our Course Advisors.
How long does the course take?
This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in the course brochure or online. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.
Do the courses have tutorial support?
Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.
If I fail an assignment can I retake it?
Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.
How do I get help with my course work?
You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.
Will I get a qualification at the end?
Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.
Will I have to sit an examination?
Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.
Do I have to buy any other materials?
Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However, some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
