As a customer service manager, you’ll make sure that the needs of customers are being met or exceeded. Your aim is to provide and promote excellent customer service throughout the organisation you work for. You’ll manage the customer service team, making sure that service standards are being met and problems are resolved.

You may work at various levels, from head office to the front end of the business, and in most cases will be:

* helping to develop and implement customer service policies in an organisation
* finding ways to measure customer satisfaction and improve services
* managing a team of customer service staff
* handling face-to-face enquiries from customers.

Types of customer service manager
Roles vary widely and job titles in customer service management include:

* corporate services manager
* customer care manager
* customer operations manager

In each of these roles, you’re expected to understand and satisfy your customers’ requirements, exceeding expectations where possible.

Responsibilities
As a customer service manager, you’ll need to:

* The range of typical starting salaries for trainee customer service managers falls between £20,500 and £25,000.
* Salaries for experienced customer service managers can reach £30,000 to £45,000, and may exceed £60,000.

Some companies, especially in retail, sales and banking, offer generous bonuses or commission and usually provide an excellent benefits package.

Working Hours

Your working hours will vary according to the type of organisation. For example, managers at head offices may work 9am to 5pm, while those in call centres or retail stores may need to work shifts, including evenings and weekends.

Some organisations employ customer service managers on a part-time basis, where the nature of the organisation’s work allows it. Self-employment is not common.

What to expect

* Work is usually carried out from an office or from a customer services desk in a public area, such as a shop or a train station. There are opportunities to work in all parts of the UK, particularly in large cities and towns.
* Some organisations have relocated their call-centre provision overseas. There may be opportunities for UK customer service managers to work overseas in either permanent or temporary positions.
* If you have face-to-face contact with customers, you must have a smart appearance and you may be required to wear a uniform.
* Whatever the setting, you will need to behave in a calm, professional and responsible manner at all times.
* Dealing with customers who are upset or angry may be stressful.
* You’ll probably work from a single location but may spend time visiting customers or travelling to other sites within the organisation. Usually, these will be local so within a day but occasionally long-distance travel may be necessary, which could involve overnight stays.

Skills

You’ll need to have:

* communication skills that allow you to inform, help and advise customers clearly and to liaise effectively with other professionals
* listening skills, to understand exactly what customers require
* problem-solving skills
* confidence, patience, politeness, tact and diplomacy, when dealing with difficult situations
* motivational skills and an ability to supervise and lead a team of customer service assistants
* creative thinking, to be able to come up with new ideas to improve customer service standards
* an ability to work well under pressure
* organisational and planning skills to develop customer service policies
* good personal presentation, especially when face-to-face with customers
* a commitment to improve your customer service skills on an ongoing basis.

Career prospects

In some organisations, you may need to undertake training and gain some experience in an assistant role before securing a position as a customer service manager.

From here, you can progress to higher levels, such as team leader or supervisor, then to various levels of management. The length of time this takes varies, depending on the type and size of the organisation.

In other organisations, you may start as a trainee customer service manager on a graduate training scheme. After your initial training, you’ll become a customer service manager, perhaps responsible for a small team of customer service assistants. Your responsibilities are likely to increase as you gain more experience and qualifications.

Moving to a larger organisation or another branch of your existing one may be necessary if you want to gain more responsibility or seek opportunities for promotion.

Options for development include training other staff in customer service skills or becoming an assessor of staff working towards customer service qualifications. This may lead to assessor or developer levels of membership with the ICS. You could also move into a wider management career, transferring to another sector if you choose.

To aid further progression, you should keep your knowledge and skills up to date by adding to your qualifications, completing short courses, attending conferences and reading relevant books, reports, newsletters and magazines.

The Customer Service Mastery (Level 3) course at Open Learning College is designed to provide a comprehensive and flexible learning experience. Unlike traditional exam-based courses, our course is marked through a process of continuous assessment, which is guided by your personal tutor.

This means that you won’t have to worry about memorising information for a final exam. Instead, you will have the opportunity to learn at your own pace and apply your knowledge through practical assignments and quizzes at the end of each module. Our online platform allows you to access the course from anywhere and at any time, and you can also choose to receive the course materials by post.

When you complete each module, you will submit your assignments and quizzes online for marking. While there is no word count requirement for these assignments, we do expect well-thought-out and complete answers. Your tutor will provide constructive feedback and guidance on areas for improvement to help you achieve your best performance.

Once your assignments have been verified and assessed, you will be awarded a certificate of achievement from the Open Learning College. This certificate confirms that you have met all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the Customer Service Mastery (Level 3), and demonstrates your competency and knowledge in this field.

Course Qualification - What qualification will I receive?

This is a dual-certification course and you will therefore receive two qualifications. This course is certified by Open Learning College via the Open Pathway Accreditation Programme.

This course leads to a Level 3 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England.

This qualification has been developed by Open Learning College to meet the specific needs of our learners and has been accredited by QLS demonstrating the learning activity has reached the required Quality Licence Scheme standards and benchmarks.

The Quality Licence Scheme recognises a provider’s commitment to high-quality courses in the non-regulated sector, by evaluating quality processes and endorsing an organisation. We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.

How does distance learning work?

To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into modules. You work through each module at your own pace and time. Once completed, submit the test, quiz, or assignment for marking. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.

When can I start the course?

The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t requireany previous experience or qualifications. How long does the course take?

Do the courses have tutorial support?

Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.

If I fail an assignment can I retake it?

Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.

How do I get help with my course work?

You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.

Will I get a qualification at the end?

Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.

Will I have to sit an examination?

Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.

Do I have to buy any other materials?

Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. 1. Samsung Notes: Write, draw and highlight in a variety of styles and colours during your lectures and meetings

2. Google Drive: Great for collaborative working whether it’s a word document, spreadsheet or formal presentation. Find your documents in Google Drive where they are saved to the free Google cloud service.

3. myHomework: A digital planner that enables you to track classes, assignments, exams and group projects so you’ll be sure never to forget a deadline

4. Microsoft Lens: Enables you to take pictures of whiteboards, blackboards, journals and other printed documents. The app will crop out everything around it and convert it into editable and shareable text.

For Windows, the minimum requirements may include a Windows operating system (such as Windows 7, 8, or 10), a processor with a speed of at least 1.6 GHz, at least 2 GB of RAM, and a graphics card with at least 128 MB of memory.

For Mac, the minimum requirements may include an Apple operating system (such as OS X 10.11 or later), a processor with a speed of at least 1.6 GHz, at least 2 GB of RAM, and a graphics card with at least 128 MB of memory.
