This Level 3 Diploma course is designed to follow on from, and compliment the basic or introductory counselling course. Reappraisal of basic counselling skills and core knowledge will be covered, together with a detailed examination of the five approaches or theories counselling.
Specific attention will be given to psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and person-centred approaches, which will give students a fuller working knowledge and understanding of advanced counselling skills. In specialist counselling fields, these advanced skills are necessary in order to be able to recognise and deal with the complex range of client needs, together with being able to understand the origins of these particular emotions and possible physiological factors.
Course Key Topics
the Bereavement Counselling (Level 3) course is divided into 10 modules.
Module 1: Reappraisal, approaches and theories of counselling
The first module reflects on previous knowledge and looks in detail at the five theories which have been adopted as the main approaches in counselling. The work of Freud, Rogers, Skinner, Ellis, Jung and Eagan will be looked at in brief in this module, and the corresponding counselling approaches examined.
Module 2: The psychodynamic approach
Students will look at how the psychodynamic approach works and is applied to the counselling situation. Specific examples and activities will give the student indications as to which particular set of client conditions benefits most from this approach.
Module 3: The cognitive behavioural approach
In this module students will look at how the cognitive behavioural approach works and is applied to the counselling situation. Specific examples and activities will give the student indications as to which particular set of client circumstances benefits most from this approach.
Module 4: The person-centred approach
This module will look at how they work and are applied to the counselling situation. Specific examples and activities will give the student indications as to which particular set of client circumstances benefits most from this approach.
Module 5: Process, skill and boundaries
Students will have the opportunity to examine the counselling process itself and the skills needed in bereavement counselling. The module will also discuss boundaries or limitations in this most sensitive area of work and will look at how to recognise and deal with these limitations; where to go next and what the following steps are.
Module 6: Loss; concepts, origins and perspectives
The main focus of this module is looking at the concepts of loss in terms of how humans interpret different kinds of losses, and how these losses are put into categories. Cultural issues within a multicultural society will be examined, together with people’s perspectives on the loss of life and the historical denial or fear which has evolved since modern ‘death’ has become an unseen event.
Module 7: Understanding bereavement
The grieving process is the main topic area for this module. Students will learn to understand the individual needs of people dealing with bereavement, and will give an insight into the implications of the process which can be psychological and physiological.
Module 8: Responding to grief
Bereavement counselling sessions are covered within this unit. Students will extend their vocabulary of the subject area. Appropriate vocabulary, expectations and responses will be examined, and there will be detailed references to particular skills which should be employed in certain situations.
Module 9: Bereavement counselling for special groups: Part 1
The remaining two modules both focus on counselling for special groups. In this module the student will learn how to deal with special individual groups: the loss of a partner, loss of a child, bereavement through trauma, disaster, war, terrorism and suicide.
Module 10: Bereavement counselling for special groups: Part 2
This module looks at the remaining special groups: children’s bereavement, the loss of a pet, empathetic grief, and other bereavement situations.

Career Profile
Counselling psychologists work with clients to help them improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing
As a counselling psychologist you’ll use psychological theory and research in therapeutic work to help clients with a range of difficult life issues and/or mental health conditions. Clients can include children, adults, families, couples and groups.
Life issues that people struggle to deal with may include:
* bereavement
* domestic violence
* relationship difficulties
* sexual abuse
* traumas.
Mental health conditions include:
* anxiety
* depression
* eating disorders
* post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
* psychosis.
You’ll work collaboratively with the client in a holistic and insightful way to enable them to consider change and take control of their recovery.
Practising as a counselling psychologist requires a high level of training and also self-awareness, which is achieved through personal therapy.
Counselling psychologists are based in:
* consultancy
* education and research
* health and care services
* hospitals
* prisons and probation services
* private practice.
Responsibilities
As a Counselling Psychologist, you’ll need to:
* undertake assessments, including assessment of mental health needs, risk assessment and psychometric testing
* establish a collaborative working relationship with the client based on trust and respect
* formulate a psychological explanation of the client’s issues, exploring their experiences and how they think, how they behave and relate to others, and how they carry out their everyday lives
* plan and implement specialist psychological treatments to help clients to understand their feelings/behaviour
* empower clients to address their issues, take control of them and make positive changes to their behaviour
* monitor and evaluate the outcome of treatments
* collaborate with – and provide advice to – colleagues, the broader multidisciplinary team and referrers in the planning of treatment and provision of services to meet the client’s needs
* communicate complex, technical and/or clinically sensitive information clearly, both orally and in writing, to clients, their families and carers
* contribute to research, service evaluation and audit, either individually or as part of a team
* receive regular clinical and professional supervision from a more senior psychologist
* carry out continuing personal and professional development to keep your knowledge and skills up to date.
With experience, you may also need to:
* train and mentor trainee psychologists
* provide clinical and professional supervision for trainees and more junior psychologists
* manage a team including other psychologists, assistant psychologists and other health staff
* manage, audit and develop counselling psychology services.
Salary
* Counselling psychologists starting as a trainee within the NHS will typically be on band 6 of the Agenda for Change (AfC) Pay Rates, which ranges from £32,306 to £39,027.
* Once qualified, salaries typically range from £40,057 to £45,839 (band 7). Salaries for senior psychologist roles can rise to between £47,126 and £53,219 (band 8a).
* Counselling psychologists with significant experience and responsibility in the roles of principal or consultant psychologist can reach salaries of £65,664 to £90,387 (Bands 8c to 8d).
Research and lecturing posts at universities often follow academic and related staff scales. For salary details, see the University and College Union (UCU).
Counselling psychologists working in private practice, commerce or industry should expect pay at a similar level to those in the public sector.

Working Hours
Working hours are usually Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, for jobs in the NHS. Many counselling psychologists are self-employed, or work partly for the NHS and partly for themselves. If you’re self-employed you may work evenings or weekends to suit client requirements.
There are good opportunities for part-time work, career breaks and job-sharing.
What to expect
* You’ll usually work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes other health service workers such as psychiatrists, occupational therapists, community psychiatric nurses, clinical psychologists, wellbeing practitioners and social workers.
* Jobs are available throughout the UK. More varied opportunities may be available in larger cities. Some health authorities prioritise psychological therapy, making more jobs available.
* The work can be challenging as it involves contact with many different types of people who are often distressed, but can also be rewarding.
* If you work for more than one employer, or are self-employed, you may need to travel locally to meet clients.

ith the right combination of skills and experience, you can move through the grades, taking on more management responsibility for both staff and counselling psychology services. There are also opportunities to move into specialist areas such as post-traumatic stress disorder or to work with specific client groups such as children or the elderly.
With experience you can become self-employed, or combine self-employment with part-time work for an employer such as the NHS.
As your career progresses you may become involved in consultancy or the teaching, supervision and training of other counselling psychologists. A senior counselling psychologist may have a portfolio of work that includes working for the NHS, while also practising privately and teaching at a university. This means that you won’t have to worry about memorising information for a final exam. Course Qualification - What qualification will I receive?
Course Qualifications
This is a dual-certification course and you will therefore receive two qualifications. This course is certified by Open Learning College via the Open Pathway Accreditation Programme.
This course leads to a Level 3 for successful learners. This means that it is independently accredited at a level of learning equivalent to level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) for England.

How does distance learning work?
To ensure studying is flexible and convenient, most of our courses are divided into modules. You work through each module at your own pace and time. Once completed, submit the test, quiz, or assignment for marking. The support period is dependent on the type of course you choose; our minimum support period is one year.
When can I start the course?
The answer is simple, when YOU want; you can start the course at any time we do not have any set enrolment dates. Most of our courses don’t requireany previous experience or qualifications. All you need is a desire and motivation to succeed. You can even start right now – call and speak to one of our Course Advisors.
How long does the course take?
This is dependent upon your choice of course and how fast you want to learn. A full breakdown of the course is available in the course brochure or online. We do provide estimated number of study hours; ask our course advisors for details.
Do the courses have tutorial support?
Yes, you will be allocated a tutor who specialises in your chosen subject and will guide you through the course, mark your assignments and generally help you with any problems you may have.
If I fail an assignment can I retake it?
Yes, your tutor will ask you to resubmit your assignment and give you support as to where you could improve.
How do I get help with my course work?
You can get help by submitting a question to your tutor via the online portal and by submitting your assignments for marking. You must send your assignments one at a time so the tutor can mark one and give you feedback.
Will I get a qualification at the end?
Our courses provide you with a dual certification upon successful completion of the course. You will receive an Open Pathway Accreditation (OPA.dip) from our college. The second qualification will be awarded by the Ofqual awarding body for the course.
Will I have to sit an examination?
Most of our courses do not require you to sit examinations, only continual assessments. Where there are examinations required, you will receive all the information you need to make your own exam arrangements. Please note exam fees are not included in your course fee, unless otherwise stated.
Do I have to buy any other materials?
Our comprehensive course materials are designed to be self-contained with all the relevant information you require to complete the course and gain the relevant certification. However, some of our students undertake additional reading via relevant textbooks/study guides and/or the Internet to add value to their studies.
