Module 1: Voices in Speech and Writing Section A: Anthology Text
For Component 1 Section A candidates study:
Voices in Speech and Writing anthology.
In this unit, you will be required to show knowledge and understanding of:
- Use a range of techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of texts for various audiences and purposes.
- Explore connections across a wide range of literary and non-literary texts.
- Identify and describe how meanings and effects are created and conveyed in texts.
- Show knowledge and understanding of the ways in which texts relate to the contexts in which they are produced and received.
- Show awareness of the different language levels, as appropriate, drawn from: phonetics, phonology and prosodics, lexis and semantics, grammar and morphology, pragmatics and discourse.
Module 2: Voices in Speech and Writing Section B: Drama Text – All My Sons
For Component 1 Section B candidates study:

In this unit, you will be required to show knowledge and understanding of:

Component 2: Varieties of Language and Literature carries 40% of the total GCE marks.
In this unit you will build on responses to non-fiction made in Unit 1 and develop the ability to:

Module 6: Investigating and Creating Texts: The Kite Runner and Band of Brothers
Investigating and Creating Texts: Literature of Conflict
This unit is the coursework component of A-Level English Language and Literature. It will build on and extend upon your prior study. The emphasis in this unit is on your ability to carry out your own independent research around a chosen topic which will then allow you to develop your skills as a writer.
This unit carries 20% of the total GCE marks. There are 60 marks available for the folder; 36 marks for the original writing and 24 marks for the commentary.
This unit is designed to help you:
- Consolidate your knowledge of literary and linguistic devices by reading widely within a topic are that you have selected or devised.
- Use reading as a stimulus for the creation of own texts.
- To produce a folder of 2500-3250 words containing:
A.One piece of literary writing
B.One piece of non-fiction writing - One analytical evaluative commentary.
