Studying philosophy is not just intellectually stimulating; it also cultivates essential skills that are highly beneficial both personally and professionally. Philosophy serves as a cornerstone for understanding the fundamental questions of existence, morality, and knowledge, making it a crucial discipline for individuals seeking a deeper understanding of the world around them.

One of the key advantages of studying philosophy is its interdisciplinary nature. Philosophical inquiry enhances critical thinking skills, which are invaluable in fields ranging from science to business. For example, scientists benefit from understanding the underlying philosophical assumptions guiding their research, allowing them to contextualise their work within broader intellectual frameworks. Similarly, professionals in diverse fields can apply philosophical reasoning to ethical dilemmas, strategic decision-making, and problem-solving, enhancing their effectiveness and adaptability in the workplace.

The Level 3 Diploma in Philosophy provides students with a thorough grounding in key philosophical concepts, texts, and methodologies. Through engaging with a diverse range of philosophical issues, students not only expand their knowledge but also sharpen their analytical abilities and argumentative skills. This course fosters a culture of critical inquiry, encouraging students to challenge assumptions, evaluate evidence, and construct coherent arguments—a skill set that is highly sought after in today’s knowledge-based economy.

Furthermore, philosophy offers more than just intellectual stimulation; it fosters personal growth and self-reflection. By grappling with profound questions about existence, morality, and the nature of reality, students gain insight into their own beliefs and values, fostering a deeper sense of self-awareness and empathy. The Level 3 Diploma in Philosophy empowers students to navigate life’s complexities with greater clarity and confidence, equipping them with the tools to engage meaningfully with the world and contribute positively to society.

In essence, the study of philosophy is not just an academic pursuit; it is a transformative journey that enriches both the mind and the soul. The Level 3 Diploma in Philosophy offers students a unique opportunity to explore the timeless questions that have shaped human thought for centuries, while also honing essential skills that are invaluable in today’s rapidly changing world. Whether you’re pursuing further academic studies or seeking personal enrichment, this course is sure to leave a lasting impact on your intellectual and personal development.

 Course Key Topics

the Philosophy (Level 3) course is divided into 10 modules.

Module 1: Moral Philosophy
Why should we be moral? Is it always wrong to lie? Why should we be good?

This first module examines the central traditional and contemporary disputes in moral philosophy. Often people consider themselves to be moral relativists, but is this view always defensible? Instead of looking at the consequences of our actions should we instead consider the motives as well?

Module 2: Applied Ethics
Ethical issues are always in the news and in this module we develop the philosophical skills needed to assess them. Here then we move away from the theoretical and apply what we have learned in module 1 to some real world issues.

In the second unit of the diploma we apply what we have learned from the first module to animal ethics, environmental ethics and the controversies surrounding the abortion debate.

Module 3: Political Philosophy
In the third module of the diploma we explore the idea of a ‘social contract’ and the extent to which we are obliged to obey the authorities in our society. Should we accept any amount of inequality so long as people have well protected property rights? In this module we also examine classical philosophical texts by Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau, as well as valuable contemporary works by John Rawls and Robert Nozick. We also explore the idea of social justice and inequality.

Module 4: Epistemology
What can we know? What is the basis of our belief in an external world? Can we be certain about anything? Is it possible that we are really nothing more than our own minds?

In the fourth module of the diploma we explore epistemology, or theories of knowledge. We consider the reliability of our perceptions and examine views of this important area of philosophy as presented by Descartes, Locke, Russell, Berkeley, and Kant. In this module we ask whether a mind-independent world really exists? We also examine the major contemporary contribution to epistemology made by John McDowell in his book Mind and World.

Module 5: Philosophy of Mind
Are we composed of two, dual substances; mind and body? Or are we merely physical things?

In this module we explore several theories of Mind including mind-body dualism, the problem of other minds, and personal identity. In the fifth module of the diploma in Philosophy we explore issues relating to the Philosophy of Mind. By drawing on works of philosophers such as Descartes, Davidson, and Wittgenstein we consider whether it is possible to establish whether we can you be sure that other people have minds? Are you the same person today that you were last year?

Module 6: Metaphysics
In this sixth module of the diploma we explore two central themes in the philosophical area of metaphysics.

First we look at the problem of universals, can someone or something be said to possess universals such as bravery or goodness? Can individual inanimate objects possess universal attributes such as a colour or texture.

Secondly we consider the idea of freedom of will. Do we appear to freely decide what to do at any given time? Are our plans and aspirations essentially futile? Is free will merely an illusion?

Module 7: An Introduction to Logic
A large part of the philosopher’s task is to examine arguments. It can be important to have a grasp of an argument’s underlying logic in order to assess its merits. This module will introduce you to some of the techniques logicians use to uncover the logic behind what people say.

Module 8: Philosophy of Religion
In the eight module of this diploma we explore questions such as ‘Does God exist?’, ‘Doesn’t the existence of natural disasters show that God is a myth?’ and ‘Is there life after death?’ As we consider these questions we will explore the arguments and views of philosophers such as Descartes, Kant and Aquinas, to name a few.

Module 9: Aesthetics
In the ninth module of the diploma we explore aesthetics. The debate on what constitutes art is an ongoing one, for some art is a painting such as the Mona Lisa, for others it is an unmade bed. In this module we consider questions such as ‘What is the value of art?’ Is it simply a matter of personal taste or are there objective reasons for liking a painting, sculpture, or novel? Why are we as human beings pre-disposed to seek out inanimate objects that we find appealing? Should art be assessed according to its moral value or is art independent of morality?

Module 10: Philosophy of History
Is history merely a series of events or does it have larger meaning? What causes historical change? Is it individuals or larger changes in social structure? In the final module of the diploma we draw on what we have learned in the earlier modules in epistemology and metaphysics and religion in order to explore what history is. In this module we will draw upon various arguments by Hegel, Marx, and others to explore this question.

Career Profile - Human Resources Officer

Career Profile

As an human resources (HR) officer, your aim is to ensure that the organisation you work for can meet its objectives by having the right workforce in place

You’ll achieve this by selectively hiring people with the right skills and experience.

You may help provide training and development opportunities for employees, and guidance around issues such as performance and progression, and disciplinary measures where they arise.

Types of Human Resources Work

HR officers are involved in a range of activities whatever the size or type of business. These cover areas such as:

* conditions of employment
* equality and diversity
* negotiation with external work-related agencies
* pay and rewards
* recruitment and retention
* working practices.

It’s possible to work in either a generalist role, covering the full range of HR work, or to specialise in a particular area.

Responsibilities
As a Human Resources Officer, you’ll need to:

* have a clear understanding of your employer’s business objectives and be able to devise and implement policies that support them
* write and develop job descriptions, person specifications and job adverts
* manage the application process – check application forms, shortlist, interview, select successful candidate/s and inform unsuccessful ones
* appoint, develop and retain the right staff
ensure that prospective staff have the right to work at the organisation
* plan and sometimes deliver training, including new staff inductions
* deal with staff welfare and administration-centred activities
advise on pay and other benefits
* undertake salary reviews and manage redundancy programmes
* carry out strategy and planning activities and develop strategies to meet immediate and long-term staff requirements
* develop and implement policies on issues such as working conditions, performance management, equal opportunities, disciplinary procedures and absence management
* advise line managers in how to implement policies and procedures
* liaise with a range of people involved in policy areas such as staff performance and health and safety
* promote equality and diversity as part of the culture of the organisation
* negotiate with staff and their representatives (e.g. trade union officials) on issues relating to pay and conditions, contracts and redundancy
* prepare staff handbooks, administer payroll and maintain employee records
* interpret and advise on employment law
* deal with grievances and implement disciplinary procedures
* analyse training needs in conjunction with departmental managers.

Salary

* Starting salaries for HR administrators range from £18,000 to £23,000.
* Salaries for HR officers/advisers are around £24,000 to £35,000.
* HR managers can earn around £35,000 to £55,000.
* Salaries for HR directors typically range from around £55,000 to in excess of £80,000.

Salaries within HR can vary considerably between employers and depend on a range of factors, including experience, skills, qualifications, location, sector and type of employer, level of responsibility and seniority.

Salaries in local government and charities are likely to be lower than in sectors such as banking and financial services. Having CIPD-accredited qualifications and chartered membership can help with career prospects.

Income data from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Reed Human Resources 2021 Salary Guide. Figures are intended as a guide only.

Working Hours

You’ll generally work a standard 37-hour week, Monday to Friday, but hours could sometimes include shift or weekend work. There may also be a requirement to work extra hours to meet deadlines.

Part-time and job-share positions and opportunities for flexible working may be available.

What to expect

* The work is mainly office based but may involve travel to other sites such as factories, warehouses, hotels, government departments or retail outlets, depending on the type and structure of the employer.
* Self-employment or freelance work is sometimes possible as organisations increasingly buy in expertise in particular areas on a short-term basis if provision is not available in-house. HR consultancy is becoming more common due to the rise in outsourcing HR practices. These opportunities are usually for those with experience in the field (a CIPD qualification is essential), possibly with a management or HR consultancy background.
* Opportunities exist throughout the UK, with most jobs available in larger towns and cities. Some specialist roles are more likely to be found in the headquarters of an organisation, usually in a major city.
* The type of organisation, structure of the HR department and your own area of work determine the opportunities for travel both within the UK and elsewhere. Careers can be international, even at a junior level.

Skills
You’ll need to have:

* business awareness and management skills
* interpersonal skills to form effective working relationships with people at all levels
* IT and numeracy skills, with strong IT skills required if managing/operating computerised payroll and benefits systems
* organisational and planning skills
* the ability to analyse, interpret and explain employment law
* integrity and approachability, as managers and staff must feel able to discuss sensitive and confidential issues with you
* curiosity and a willingness to challenge organisational culture where necessary
* teamworking skills and the ability to collaborate well with others
* the ability to compile and interpret statistical data and communicate it in a professional and understandable manner
* influencing and negotiating skills to implement personnel policies
* the ability to work well under pressure
* the ability to juggle multiple tasks and to prioritise your workload
* potential to handle a leadership role
* cultural awareness and language skills can be useful if working overseas.

Career prospects

New graduates are likely to begin their human resources career by working in a general HR role. The choice is usually then to either continue to enjoy the breadth of this work and remain in this environment or to move into a more specialist HR role, in areas such as:

* diversity and inclusion
* employee engagement
* employee relations
* employment law
* learning, training and development
* organisation development
* performance and reward
* recruitment and talent planning.

These specialist roles are more likely to be found in the headquarters of major organisations, so you may need to move job to find a role that suits you and your career aims.

Promotion depends on ability. With a combination of experience and CIPD qualifications, you can move into an HR management role with responsibility for a number of HR officers. You may find yourself overseeing an area such as recruitment and training or advising managers on a range of HR issues.

In the longer term, HR managers may move into more senior roles and be promoted to a HR director role, possibly as far as board level. As a director, you would be involved in HR strategy and influencing the organisation’s wider business aims.

Self-employment and freelance work as a consultant to HR departments is sometimes possible for experienced HR staff.

Grading & How it Works

The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.

This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.

Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.

We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.
