Embark on a transformative learning journey with the UK’s most innovative home study provider, offering courses designed to unlock your true potential and facilitate the career change you desire. Access our distance learning courses directly from anywhere, anytime, and acquire industry-recognised Professional Qualifications essential for advancing in your career.

Specifically, explore the flexible and convenient Human Resources (Level 3) course, an ideal way to gain a diploma qualification. Whether you aim for further education, improved job prospects, or expanded knowledge, this comprehensive course allows you to prepare thoroughly for exams or careers through home study. Plus, it’s structured to be accessible and beneficial even if you have no prior knowledge in Human Resources.

The Human resource departments are at the forefront of managing people and other resources within a business. To do this, a business needs a human resource specialist, someone who is skilled and up-to-date with the latest regulations, employment laws and policies.

Department leaders and managers are responsible for the effective day-to-day running of a business. It is the Human Resources (HR) Department that recruits, trains, supports and develops employees. They are also the department to whom others turn when there is a need for disciplinary or dismissal procedures required.

In larger businesses, there will be a separate department needed to manage the day-to-day processes within human resources but in smaller businesses, human resources is a responsibility often tagged onto to someone’s role. That someone could be you, especially after completing a Human Resources Diploma.
Our diploma has a broad base, allowing you to become familiar with all the necessary functions, skills and attributes of recruiting, training, developing, supporting and dismissing people;

  • The recruitment, selection, and induction of staff is essential in bringing the right people into your organisation
  • Producing and maintaining personnel records is important for your business and your employees
  • Managing staff and relationships requires diplomacy and tact, along with other skills as detailed in this module
  • Support, training, and development are key to ensuring the right people stay with your business and that they upskill so that your business can move forward
  • When things go wrong, HR are the people to turn to for advice and action relating to disciplinary procedures, grievances, and tribunals
  • And finally, terminating someone’s employment must be done correctly and within current employment law

 Course Key Topics

the Human Resources (Level 3) course is divided into 6 modules.

Module 1: Recruitment, Selection and Induction of Staff
Module 2: Producing and Maintaining Personnel Records
Module 3: Staff Management and Relationships
Module 4: Staff Support, Training and Development
Module 5: Disciplinaries, Grievances and Tribunals
Module 6: Employment Terminations

Career Profile - Human Resources Officer

Career Profile

As an human resources (HR) officer, your aim is to ensure that the organisation you work for can meet its objectives by having the right workforce in place

You’ll achieve this by selectively hiring people with the right skills and experience.

You may help provide training and development opportunities for employees, and guidance around issues such as performance and progression, and disciplinary measures where they arise.

Types of Human Resources Work

HR officers are involved in a range of activities whatever the size or type of business. These cover areas such as:

* conditions of employment
* equality and diversity
* negotiation with external work-related agencies
pay and rewards
* recruitment and retention
* working practices.

It’s possible to work in either a generalist role, covering the full range of HR work, or to specialise in a particular area.

Responsibilities
As an Human Resources Officer, you’ll need to:

* have a clear understanding of your employer’s business objectives and be able to devise and implement policies that support them
* write and develop job descriptions, person specifications and job adverts
* manage the application process – check application forms, shortlist, interview, select successful candidate/s and inform unsuccessful ones
* appoint, develop and retain the right staff
* ensure that prospective staff have the right to work at the organisation
* plan and sometimes deliver training, including new staff inductions
* deal with staff welfare and administration-centred activities
* advise on pay and other benefits
* undertake salary reviews and manage redundancy programmes
* carry out strategy and planning activities and develop strategies to meet immediate and long-term staff requirements
* develop and implement policies on issues such as working conditions, performance management, equal opportunities, disciplinary procedures and absence management
* advise line managers in how to implement policies and procedures
* liaise with a range of people involved in policy areas such as staff performance and health and safety
* promote equality and diversity as part of the culture of the organisation
* negotiate with staff and their representatives (e.g. trade union officials) on issues relating to pay and conditions, contracts and redundancy
* prepare staff handbooks, administer payroll and maintain employee records
* interpret and advise on employment law
* deal with grievances and implement disciplinary procedures
* analyse training needs in conjunction with departmental managers.

Salary

* Starting salaries for HR administrators range from £18,000 to £23,000.
* Salaries for HR officers/advisers are around £24,000 to £35,000.
* HR managers can earn around £35,000 to £55,000.
* Salaries for HR directors typically range from around £55,000 to in excess of £80,000.

Salaries within HR can vary considerably between employers and depend on a range of factors, including experience, skills, qualifications, location, sector and type of employer, level of responsibility and seniority.

Salaries in local government and charities are likely to be lower than in sectors such as banking and financial services. Having CIPD-accredited qualifications and chartered membership can help with career prospects.

Income data from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Reed Human Resources 2021 Salary Guide.

Figures are intended as a guide only.

Working Hours

You’ll generally work a standard 37-hour week, Monday to Friday, but hours could sometimes include shift or weekend work. There may also be a requirement to work extra hours to meet deadlines.

Part-time and job-share positions and opportunities for flexible working may be available.

What to expect

* The work is mainly office based but may involve travel to other sites such as factories, warehouses, hotels, government departments or retail outlets, depending on the type and structure of the employer.
* Self-employment or freelance work is sometimes possible as organisations increasingly buy in expertise in particular areas on a short-term basis if provision is not available in-house. HR consultancy is becoming more common due to the rise in outsourcing HR practices. These opportunities are usually for those with experience in the field (a CIPD qualification is essential), possibly with a management or HR consultancy background.
* Opportunities exist throughout the UK, with most jobs available in larger towns and cities. Some specialist roles are more likely to be found in the headquarters of an organisation, usually in a major city.
* The type of organisation, structure of the HR department and your own area of work determine the opportunities for travel both within the UK and elsewhere. Careers can be international, even at a junior level.

Skills

You’ll need to have:

* business awareness and management skills
* interpersonal skills to form effective working relationships with people at all levels
* IT and numeracy skills, with strong IT skills required if managing/operating computerised payroll and benefits systems
* organisational and planning skills
* the ability to analyse, interpret and explain employment law
* integrity and approachability, as managers and staff must feel able to discuss sensitive and confidential issues with you
* curiosity and a willingness to challenge organisational culture where necessary
* teamworking skills and the ability to collaborate well with others
* the ability to compile and interpret statistical data and communicate it in a professional and understandable manner
* influencing and negotiating skills to implement personnel policies
* the ability to work well under pressure
* the ability to juggle multiple tasks and to prioritise your workload
potential to handle a leadership role
* cultural awareness and language skills can be useful if working overseas.

Career prospects

New graduates are likely to begin their human resources career by working in a general HR role. The choice is usually then to either continue to enjoy the breadth of this work and remain in this environment or to move into a more specialist HR role, in areas such as:

* diversity and inclusion
* employee engagement
* employee relations
* employment law
* learning, training and development
* organisation development
* performance and reward
* recruitment and talent planning.

These specialist roles are more likely to be found in the headquarters of major organisations, so you may need to move job to find a role that suits you and your career aims.

Promotion depends on ability. With a combination of experience and CIPD qualifications, you can move into an HR management role with responsibility for a number of HR officers. You may find yourself overseeing an area such as recruitment and training or advising managers on a range of HR issues.

In the longer term, HR managers may move into more senior roles and be promoted to a HR director role, possibly as far as board level. As a director, you would be involved in HR strategy and influencing the organisation’s wider business aims.

Self-employment and freelance work as a consultant to HR departments is sometimes possible for experienced HR staff.

Grading & How it Works

The UK has a unique higher education grading system. Its most unique feature compared to traditional grading systems is that it aims to be more specific in describing students’ academic achievement.

This type of assessment method is highly valued because it offers many advantages. Most importantly it highlights your academic strengths and specific skills, therefore, it helps employers gain a better understanding of your true potential.

Since it is proved to be such an efficient tool to assess students’ performance, many foreign countries like Canada, Australia and India are using the same grading system on some occasions with small changes to fit into their own local educational context.

We use a letter grade scale from A to F to indicate the students’ academic performance. If you get an A it means you have shown outstanding knowledge whereas if you get an F it means your score is not sufficient to pass the exam.

Completing the Human Resources Level 3 Course has been a game-changer for me. As a department manager, the insights gained from each module have significantly enhanced my ability to oversee the HR functions crucial for our business. The comprehensive coverage, from recruitment to terminations, provides a holistic understanding of HR responsibilities. The course doesn't just focus on theoretical knowledge; it offers practical skills for real-world applications. I especially appreciated the emphasis on current regulations and employment laws. Highly recommend this diploma to anyone looking to excel in managing human resources effectively.
